Kickstart Fundamental Movement Skills with Our Movement Ninja Approach

Kickstart Fundamental Movement Skills with Our Movement Ninja Approach

Teaching Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) can be challenging, especially when students are just starting out. But what if there was a fun, engaging way to help students discover these skills for themselves? Enter the Movement Ninja—a character designed to challenge students to explore and master each FMS through interactive activities and self-discovery. This approach not only makes learning FMS exciting but also saves teachers time by seamlessly integrating skill development into every lesson.

Why Start with the Movement Ninja?

Movement rubric for fundamental movements

The Movement Ninja sets fun challenges for students, helping them figure out what’s necessary to master each movement. For example, with jumping, students might be asked to try jumping without bending their knees, ankles, or hips. They’ll quickly see that bending these joints is crucial to executing the jump properly. This playful approach helps students internalize the mechanics of movement, making the learning process more engaging and effective.

The Power of Pre-Assessment:

Fundamental Movement Skills

Before diving into your 4-6 week FMS block, start with a pre-assessment. This quick self-assessment helps establish a baseline for each student’s abilities. You and your students can track their progress throughout the block, and at the end, revisit the assessment to see how much they’ve improved.

How the FMC PE Programme Integrates FMS

Unlike other PE programs that require extra planning for FMS, the FMC PE Programme integrates FMS seamlessly into every lesson. You don’t have to worry about adding another standalone program to your already full plate—we’ve done the work for you.

Each FMS (like jumping, catching, or running) is taught three times throughout a student’s primary school years. For each FMS, there are 6-8 skill points to master, but during each 4-6 week block, you’ll only focus on 2-3 skill points. This means that each lesson will introduce a single skill point, which is directly taught using the Star Movement of the Week Skill Poster provided with the lesson.

Focused Practice and Fun Games

After 5 minutes of practicing the skill point, the students apply it in a fun, engaging FMS game. These games are designed to make skill development fun while ensuring students get repeated practice. By the end of the 4-6 week block, your students will have honed their skills and be ready to assess their progress.

Final Assessment and Student Reflection

At the end of the block, students complete a final assessment to track their improvement. This is an excellent time for students to reflect on how they’ve progressed and identify areas they’d like to continue working on. The structured approach ensures that each FMS is revisited multiple times throughout their primary school journey, so students have ample opportunity to master each skill.
