Science Week Themed PE Games

Science Week Themed PE Games

Science Week is upon us and what better way to immersing your class in science than by incorporating science-themed physical education games into your primary school curriculum. We’ve created a collection of engaging and educational PE activities that combine movement and learning, making exercise a blast.

Let's explore these science themed games that offer a fun way to combine physical activity and knowledge.

Simon Science Says

The game follows the classic "Simon Science Says" rules, but with space-themed commands that help kids engage both physically and intellectually. It’s an opportunity for young learners to embody various movements related to the cosmos, combining physical activity with a fun learning experience.

  • Gather the children in an open space.
  • Explain the rules: "Simon Science says" commands must be followed, but if "Simon Science" gives a command without saying "Simon Science says," they shouldn't perform the action.
  • Encourage children to mimic the science-themed movements – orbiting like a planet, bouncing like an asteroid, and more.
  • Use this game as a platform to discuss and expand on each command, offering simple explanations about elements of different scientific concepts such as the solar system. For instance, explain why planets orbit and the characteristics of asteroids.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Prepare for an outdoor adventure with the Nature Scavenger Hunt, an exploration of the natural world! This activity encourages young minds to observe and discover the wonders of nature while learning about different elements such as leaves, rocks, and flowers.

    1. Distribute the Nature Scavenger Hunt sheets to each child.
    2. Explain the task: Kids will search for specific natural items – leaves, rocks, flowers, and more – using the sheet as a guide.
    3. Encourage children to explore, reminding them to be respectful and careful when interacting with nature.
    4. As they find each item, prompt them to note its characteristics, encouraging discussion about leaf shapes, insects, and other natural elements.

Race to the Planet Jigsaw Relay

    • Print the jigsaw puzzles on card and place them face down under cones in the playing area.
    • Assign each team a planet card. Each team has to retrieve their jigsaw pieces hidden under cones around the playing area.
      • One member from each team runs to a cone, retrieves one jigsaw piece and returns to their team.
      • Once back, the next team member runs to get the next piece. This continues until all pieces are collected.
      • If they turn over a cone and find a piece that does not belong to them they place it back under the cone, face down, and return empty handed to their team.
      • Once a team has all their pieces, they must work together to assemble the puzzle and recreate the image of their designated planet.
      • The completed picture must match the example or image provided to them.
      • The first team to correctly assemble their planet puzzle and shout out the name of the planet wins the race.

Download the additional resources and take the excitement further! Don’t miss out on these fantastic tools to make learning an adventure!

These activities are not just about physical movement—they're designed to engage young minds, making learning an active and thrilling experience. Get your young learners moving, exploring, and discovering the wonders of science in a way that's as fun as it is educational!
